Think Tank Illuminates Bogus Asbestos Studies

Here’s one more reason that our attorneys in New York City feel strongly about fighting for the rights of asbestos-exposure victims: Science is on their side.

Despite the fact that the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the World Health Organization are among the major medical agencies that agree on the dangers of asbestos exposure, this was never welcome news to “big business.”

Embattled by asbestos lawsuits over its brakes, Ford sank some $40 million into scientific studies specifically aimed at debunking the connection between asbestos and mesothelioma.

Case in point: A recent investigation undertaken by the Center for Public Integrity looked at asbestos-health studies funded in the 1970s by the Ford Motor Co. Embattled at that time by asbestos lawsuits over its brakes, Ford began to sink what would end up totaling some $40 million into scientific studies specifically aimed at debunking the connection between asbestos and mesothelioma.

Academics say that was wasted money.

“All (Ford and its consultants) accomplished is to try to generate doubt where, really, little doubt existed,” says John Dement, a professor in Duke University’s Division of Occupations and Environmental Medicine. “They’ve published a lot, but they’ve really produced no new science.”

If you’re a brake mechanic or any other skilled tradesman who became sick after being exposed to asbestos on the job, our New York City asbestos attorneys are ready to fight for the compensation for medical expenses that your deserve.
