Located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn along the East River, the Domino Sugar Refinery is one the last remnants of Brooklyn’s industrial past. Designated a landmark by the city of New York, the facility, which produced refined sugar for decades, ceased operation in 2004.
The building was completely rebuilt in 1882 after a fire largely destroyed the original refinery. Like many facilities constructed throughout the late-19th and early 20th centuries, asbestos was heavily used in the construction and maintenance of the Domino Sugar Refinery.
Asbestos was exceptionally popular as an insulating agent, even for decades after the health dangers it posed were known.
