GEORGIA-PACIFIC’S HISTORY WITH ASBESTOS

Beginning in the 1950s, the Georgia-Pacific Corporation has been one of the country’s largest producers of building supplies, pulp, paper, packaging and other lumber-derived products. Georgia-Pacific has two plants in New York:

  • A FACTORY IN AKRON, NEW YORK
  • A PAPER MILL AND SUPPORTING FACILITIES IN PLATTSBURGH, NEW YORK

Asbestos-containing products were used in the construction of both facilities. Asbestos was used to cover pipes, generators and radiators, and served as a fire retardant throughout the facilities. The asbestos lined boilers and pumps as well.

Many products made by Georgia-Pacific contained asbestos. These products include:

  • JOINT COMPOUND
  • WALL FIXTURES
  • DRYWALL
  • PACKING MATERIALS

Asbestos was removed from Georgia-Pacific’s products in the 1970s, but not before being used in the construction and maintenance of untold thousands of buildings.
