Considering Asbestos Exposure on the 15th Anniversary of 9/11

On September 11th, 2001, our nation experienced the most devastating attack on its soil since Pearl Harbor nearly 60 years before. Immediately, rescue crews and first-responders went to work, digging through rubble and placing their own lives at risk to help save the lives of others. Tragically, the danger posed to these heroes did not stop when they left the Twin Towers.

400 tons of pulverized asbestos erupted in a toxic cloud when the Towers collapsed. Those inside the Towers and close to Ground Zero could not help but be exposed to this deadly chemical as it blanketed entire blocks of our city. Asbestos-exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma and asbestosis, and is linked to complications with lung cancer and other serious diseases. The 9/11 first-responders exposed to asbestos are all at risk for these diseases – and all deserving of justice should one of them manifest.

Since 2011, more than 5,400 people diagnosed with 9/11-related cancers have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program. Currently, the most common diagnoses include nonmelanoma skin cancer and prostate cancer. As time goes on, it is reasonable to expect a significant spike in cancer diagnoses related to 9/11. Mesothelioma and asbestosis can take 30 or more years to develop.
